Extravagant Generosity: Putting God First in Living & Giving

September 13th – October 11th

Shiny Gods Interactive DVD study: 9:15 AM & 10:15 AM in the Fellowship Hall

“You shall have no other Gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3

When God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, each one of them were pretty powerful rules of life to live by.  All ten are ones we still honor to this day as the bedrock of our faith and our culture.  We teach the Golden Rule to children of all ages, the rule of law forbids stealing and murder, and our moral compass leads us away from coveting our neighbor’s possessions and giving false testimony.

So why did the LORD choose to begin with “You shall have no other Gods before me” as #1 on the list of the Ten Commandments?  Perhaps it’s because if God isn’t first in our hearts, then it’s much more difficult for the rest of life to fall into place.  By putting anyone or anything else before God, it becomes near impossible to follow the rest of those commandments.

This fall Linworth UMC will participate in our annual Extravagant Generosity series.  This year’s series is one developed by Rev. Mike Slaughter of Ginghamsburg UMC called “God First: Putting God First in Living and Giving.”

Commitment Cards will be handed out September 13-27 and collected October 4th-11th.  At the close of the series on October 11th we will have our Celebration Services at 9:00 and 10:30 AM to dedicate our commitments to the mission and ministry of Linworth UMC for the 2016 calendar year.  We also encourage you to check out the interactive DVD study in the fellowship hall throughout each week of the series on Sunday mornings.

Each week’s theme for this year’s God First series will take a unique perspective to the subject of living and giving in our walk with Christ:

Week 1: Naming Our Idols
Week 2: Money, Work, and Debt
Week 3: Be Faithful, Save, and Give
Week 4: Heart Giving
Week 5: Celebration Sunday

We pray that as we take this journey together that we all may truly learn and discover what it means to put God first in our daily lives.
